This is why programs like Recuva can sometimes recover files you delete, generally as long as you had not written to the disk after deletion. As Windows creates new file or even expands them, it will re-use the space (if it needs it, that is no other free space on the disk) as needed. However, the way that is done is by Windows putting an x'e5' as the first character of the file in the directory. It just isn't allocated and space is recovered. ![]() Surprise, even if you delete it by emptying your recycle bin, the file STILL exists on your disk. The real answer here is when you delete something, except for a special case where the file is LARGE, it isn't deleted from your hard drive but put into your recycle bin.
